It is also the only part of Turkey with a sizeable Christian population. Some of the oldest Christian churches are in the towns in southeastern Turkey, and the last few Syrian Orthodox Christian families are there. They speak and read Aramaic, one of the ancient Biblical tongues. Unfortunately, we never got to explore that aspect of Turkey.
